At the workshop you will:

  • Learn the basics of winter seed sowing, a cost-effective method for starting seeds during the winter months.
  • Use recycled materials to create mini greenhouses.
  • Discover the benefits of native plants and their role in supporting healthy landscapes.
  • Take home your seeded containers for the winter + a free zine with instructions

The Kenny Neighborhood Association Grass Lake Restoration Team, has been hosting buckthorn removal events to regain space overtaken by the invasive species. The goal is to replace the buckthorn thickets with a native plant garden on the southeast shore of Grass Lake during the 2026 growing season and learn how to improve, maintain, and expand natural habitat.

To help meet this goal, we’re asking for assistance from the larger community to help grow native plants for the garden. Participants should plan to plant at least 10 small containers (think half-gallon of milk or equivalent) for the Grass Lake Native Garden. Thanks to the generosity of the MN Seed Project there will be ample seed available and participants are welcome to plant more containers for their home gardens too. (Many thanks to Stephanie Hankerson!)

Things to bring if possible:

  • Clean milk jugs, salad boxes with lids, or other small plastic containers
  • A small bag of potting soil
  • A box to carry your containers home
