Buckthorn leaves and berries

WHO: Folks who love Grass Lake Wetland and want to help rein in buckthorn! We’ll be on the shores and it can get steep in areas so be judicious in deciding if and how to involve young ones.
WHEN: Sat, October 10, 2026 at 1-3pm, Register
WHERE: Meet at the the garden on the southeast shore
WHAT TO BRING: Dress for the weather:  Rain or shine!  If you have gloves, safety glasses, saws, or loppers – bring them.  Gloves will be provided for those who don’t have their own. If you have a smartphone with the iNaturalist app, bring it.
BUSTING METHOD: We will train everyone on identification of the plant. We will be focused on removal (seedlings, branches, trunks). We will work in small groups, moving along the edge of the lake as far as we can go in the 3-hour time frame. We may also pick up trash, do a bit of seed collection/dispersal, shrub planting, and iNaturalist plant identification.

OVERALL PLAN: We are targeting the end of August through early November to do the removal because this is the most effective window for buckthorn removal. Some info from the DNR about buckthorn:

– “What is buckthorn? (And why it’s bad)”
