MTC Bus Route Changes on 56th St

There are plans to permanently eliminate the hourly Route 4D bus service operating on 56th Street between Lyndale and Penn avenues effective sometime in April when the reconstruction of Penn Avenue between 54th and 60th streets begins. Currently, Monday thru Friday service is provided from about 8:45 am to 3:40 pm and 6:55 pm to 10:50 pm. Saturday service is provided from about 7:45 am to 9:10 pm. There is no Sunday/holiday service.

Recent passenger counts indicate that most Route 4 customers living along 56th Street walk to either Penn or Lyndale since buses operate more frequently on those streets. As a result of elimination of the 56th St. branch, Route 4 will be simplified. More service will be provided on 50th Street between Bryant and Penn avenues and on Penn Avenue between 50th and 56th streets.

Route 156 Express buses, which operate during weekday rush hours from 6:10 to 8:10 am and 4:00 to 6:50 pm, will continue to serve all of 56th Street except during the Penn Avenue construction. This route will detour via 54th Street beginning sometime in April, and then return to 56th St. but only between Lyndale and Newton avenues sometime in June, until these buses return to the entire length of 56th Street when the construction is complete in the fall.

Additional information, including the exact implementation date, will be posted at the 56th Street bus stops and available on line closer to the start of construction on Penn Avenue.
